Live Jazz!

August 1, 2011

A club where we play regularly is in imminent danger of closing. It is the 5C Cultural Center and Cafe in the East Village.  The Miles Cafe  is new and just recently got their liquor license

Attendance at live performance venues of all types is low, excepting, of course, Broadway and jazz clubs whose high profile performers tour the world. Serious music lovers tend to stay home and listen to their stereos. And everyone is connected to the internet, Netflix, and TV as a main source of entertainment.

Please support live jazz!!!

A Message from Niranjana Shankar: Puppets Jazz Cafe, February 3, 2011

Dear All,

I recently met a man who has been arrested many times for selling drugs.

I had a conversation with him and needless to say his life has not been easy.
When was life ever easy and for whom is it easy I wonder and its safe to say that we all agree to that fact being invariable. But the degree to which we punish ourselves for reasons sometimes unbeknownst, is a quantity worthy of empathy if you can muster it.
This man is vertiginously tall with the most hopeful face and wears a jacket that appears to add to his already larger than life persona. He prefers to get a hair cut every fifteen days, hates the smell of smokes, loves movies,  is an avid reader of newspapers and staying aloof is how he says he stays out of trouble. I would imagine that patterns and people we have known all our lives are difficult sever.
He has been trying to convince people of his skills in order to secure himself in a job and even chance thinking about a future more ordinary, like yours and mine. But his past is too much of a gamble for anyone. Beyond our purposes and consummate duties is there really a place for all of us? One that we can accept anyway?
I’d like to dedicate this next show to the extraordinary.
Love Always.
